Geology

Geology is the study of the history of the Earth, its rock composition, and the processes that shape it.  Using direct evidence from rocks, geologists try to determine how the Earth formed and how old the rocks and fossils are in terms of the evolutionary history of life.

But geology is more than that.  For example, petroleum geologists, using clues from the rocks and other geological formations, can make precise predictions on where oil is located.  Using this knowledge, oil companies can then know where to drill for oil.  This site defines some of the aspects of geology.
